Ljubljana, Slovenia
LJUBLJANA AT A GLANCE Capital of Slovenia Population: 270,000 Fun Fact: When excavation to build a library for the National and University Library of Slovenia commenced, the remains of a Roman Bathhouse were found. |
We stayed at Pri Mraku Guesthouse in Ljublijana. Our hotel was very nice and the staff was helpful. After we came back from dinner, my dad asked the man at the front desk if he had Coca-Cola available to purchase. The man said yes, but only regular. When my dad mentioned he preferred Diet Coke, the man went to his car and brought back a Coke Light, offering to give it to my dad free of charge. This is just one example of the hospitality we encountered along our journey.

A Man with a Plan - Architect Jože Plečnik
Jože Plečnik lived from 1872-1957. He was born in Ljubljana, where he spent the majority of his life. Plečnik studied under Viennese architect Otto Wagner. He practiced design in Vienna and Prague for a number of years. Plečnik also taught at the University of Ljubljana. Much of Ljubljana's design and architecture can be attributed to Plečnik. The main areas you'll see Plečnik's work include the riverfront banks, parks, and bridges; The Church of St. Francis; the parks and plazas scattered throughout the city; the Žale cemetery; the Vzajemna Insurance Company Offices; and the University of Ljubljana library. His style is characterized by iconic and classical forms composed in unique and sometimes unconventional ways. Logically organized design and richly decorated facades featuring organic decoration describe the distinct nature of Plečnik's work.
